There are plays that tug at your heartstrings and you know, once you’ve witnessed them, that they will never leave you. “The Ones We Leave Behind” is just such an experiential piece that stays with you because it talks about us, and possibly our generation’s biggest collective experience – loneliness. Loretta Seto’s storyline is strong and compelling. As the playwright, she has strung together a beautifully weaved plot about relationships- personal, professional and familial, that resonate with everyone in the audience. Her background as a children’s book author shines through as each character and element in the play fulfils a part and purpose. The production explores themes of how we build distances between those we love, maintaining loneliness despite our deepest desire to connect.

The star-studded cast was phenomenal and had the audience in fits of laughter! “The Ones We Leave Behind” comprises of cast members that have been on television, film and life-long theatre extraordinaires. Alannah Ong, in particular, was a favourite. Her timing was impeccable as we all held our stomachs roaring with mirth at her portrayal of an immigrant mother. This was particularly satisfying because it was laughter by recognition – we were laughing out of understanding rather than othering.
